The Olympics

The Olympics is a tribute to athletes, to sport and to fair play and honor.  There is the chance that the camper you swim with this summer could become an Olympian. Maybe it is the kid who runs so fast they always are first when someone yells Popsicles. Well you have to have some incentive now don't you!  Could a future Olympian be hanging out in the train after lunch or is that possible world class athlete biding time at camp  while they wait for the return of all that snow?

There is so much info on the Olympics that its hard to look at just a bit. Wikipedia covers it pretty well with a few photos and some text divided by subsections. You can read about all or just a little part of the incredible history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Games

What is your favorite Summer Olympic Sport? It often has to do with an athlete whose personal story to attain the skills needed for Olympic competition have made them an instant celebrity.  There are all those more obscure Olympic sports too, the TV stations just don't give them prime time coverage to allow a following to develop.  Like archery,  and the  equestrian  sports( the only sport where men and women compete on equal terms)

In 2012 the Summer Games will be in London all the pageantry and drama will come at us through every device the techies can muster and we will fill a couple weeks with Olympic Moments.

You don't have to wait though, come to Holiday Hill Day Camp in beautiful Mansfield, CT for a summer full of Olympic Sport! http://www.holidayrecreation.com/

Take Aim and Fire At A Summer of Fun

Robin Hood, The Dark Arrow, Cupid, legends are built around those with a skill for bow and arrow. The keen eye and  steady hand required for a bulls eye take practice and  then more practice. That is something you can get this summer at Holiday Hill Day Camp. http://www.holidayrecreation.com/  The classic bow and arrow is a fun sport and  practicing and making that first bulls eye a moment to savor for years to come.
The Long Bow has been around for centuries. The history of the world is filled with wars fought by bow and conquests  for the steady hand. Stop to think just where did all those bows and arrows come from. Certainly not a trip to a local store! Here is a project for you to  consider.

Come out to camp this summer and  master the skills required in archery. You too could become a legend with the bow and arrow!

Camp Director in Winter Mode

Frosty cold days and quiet mark camp in the winter months.  The snow shovel is the the most frequently used piece of equipment. Stacks of catalogs come in and camp registration materials are going out. The baseball diamond lies under a deep white blanket. The archery field, ropes course and  grounds are haunted by remembered laughter and the call of birds. We wait for the return of campers and outings groups to bring back all the smiles.

So what should a camp director do? Play guitar, sing a few of the old favorites. Be sure to ask at camp  this season to hear "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgrerald" a song  originally put out by Gordon Lightfoot. Listen to the video clip on the blog here. Dudley played at the Bread-Box  to benefit the Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic. The Bread-Box Showcase mic raises funds for the soup kitchen which is feeding our hungry neighbors. It is held in the sanctuary of St. Paul's at 22 Valley St. in Willimantic, Ct.
